Mayor's letter aired; where is the other side?
Recently, WDAM-TV news aired Mayor Melvin Mack's letter foiling a deal between Jones County Board of Supervisors and the mayor to build a new Department of Human Services building in the vicinity of the old Kress building.
The Hattiesburg American excerpted the letter in the March 6, 2007, edition, justifying withdrawing from the deal, which states, in part: "... I feel that we must be attentive to our downtown merchants and support the group that committed not only their time and efforts but also considerable financial resources to the improvement of our city." According to the March 6 edition of the Leader-Call, "... Mayor Melvin Mack said that construction of the building would conflict with the downtown revitalization efforts." Will "revitalization" develop into a "canopy?" However, it is interesting if one thinks back when the old Kress store was bustling with business.
