Get skirt-ready this season

Exchanging long pants for bare legs is one of summer's great pleasures for women -- but only if you feel good about how your legs look. With Good Housekeeping's simple strategies, you can be a shameless showoff in no time. (More beauty advice from the magazine appears on www.goodhousekeeping.com.)

Get silkier legs

"Dry skin is unhealthy skin," says Sandy Johnson, M.D., of the Johnson Dermatology Clinic in Fort Smith, Ark. "Well-hydrated skin provides a better barrier to the environment." And it makes legs look smoother and prettier, too. Here are some tips to fight flakiness:

Choose the right moisturizer: "Our skin is naturally hydrated in the summer because of extra moisture in the air," explains Johnson. That means you can retire the rich creams in favor of lighter formulas.

Johnson Smokes Springfield TT

Threatening skies and ankle deep mud wasnt enough to stop the IMDA the Illinois State Fairgrounds track crew from finishing round three of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Singles Championship. Originally scheduled to run Saturday night, rain pushed the event back to Memorial Day Monday. Despite all the water the normally cushion race track turned into a slick groove as the sun broke through the clouds. American Suzuki / Parts Unlimiteds Jake Johnson got a great start, rode a near flawless twenty five laps for the win. I got beat here on the last lap in 2003 when the track was like this, said Johnson. I wasnt going to let that happen again.

Johnson was able to pull over a six second lead over Obermeyer Yamaha / Troy Lee Designs Henry Wiles. Wiles had been able to pressure Johnson for a few laps, but soon found himself slipping off the pace.

Used Convertible Values: Volkswagen Chases Ferrari For Top Spot

June 1, 2007 Buying an set of wheels is an emotional decision but wed always suggest that a look through the residual value figures might help to point you towards a more rational emotional decision. The latest figures from EurotaxGlasss in the UK are a case in point. EurotaxGlasss has found that a number of volume-brand drop-tops retain a far greater proportion of their value than prestige-brand models from the likes of BMW, Lexus and Maserati. While the Ferrari F430 Spider holds onto its value better than any other 12-month-old convertible on sale in the UK (a typical 06-plate example retaining 97 per cent of its original list price as a trade value), hot on its heels is the rather more humble Volkswagen Eos (at 94 per cent retained value in 2.0 TDI Sport guise). Read on for the top 20 listing.

Nissan CEO: Board members will forego bonus pay

YOKOHAMA, Japan -- Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn told shareholders Wednesday that the Japanese automaker's board members will forego their bonus pay to take responsibility for poor performance.

Ghosn acknowledged at a hall packed with more than 2,100 shareholders, a record attendance for Nissan, in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, that the company had not met its targets for fiscal 2006.

"We are taking our responsibility seriously," he said.

In the fiscal year ended March, Tokyo-based Nissan Motor Co. marked its first profit drop in seven years _ the first time earnings have slid under the turnaround efforts led by Ghosn.

Ghosn told reporters after the meeting that Nissan was not in talks with any automaker now about expanding the alliance it already has with Renault SA of France.

Let's Go to the Videotape: Audi RS6 On the 'Ring

Those lovable scamps over at Fast Lane Daily plugged some spy footage of the upcoming Audi RS6 into their midday newscast. Gathered by Automedia at Germany's N眉rburgring, the clip shows Audi's answer to the Mercedes E63 AMG and BMW M5 in effect, its larger air intakes, the wider fender flares and rear diffuser giving away the goods. It's reportedly powered by the same V10 as the S6, but turbocharged to produce between 520 and 550 hp. We'll see the finished product at the Frankfurt show -- which is shaping up to be a killer -- later this year. Whether or not it causes the death of the RS4 remains to be seen. – Mike Spinelli

Robert Kubica crash in Montreal

Data released from Robert Kubica's crash at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal shows just how lucky the BMW-Sauber driver was to escape with relatively minor injuries.

According to the onboard accident data recorder, Kubica hit the wall approaching the hairpin turn at 230 km/h and experienced a 75-G impact.

Former Lotus engineer Peter Wright, who is now the head of the FIA safety commission, studied the data and concluded that all of the safety measures worked perfectly.

To put it in perspective, F1 drivers usually experience g-forces of 5 when under heavy braking and 4 while going through a corner.

Former F1 driver David Purley is believed to have survived a 178 g crash during pre-qualifying for the British Grand Prix in 1977.

Freddy Loix (B/Volkswagen Polo S2000): "We have really made a lot of progress on the development of the VW Polo since the beginning of the year. We went through two days of testing last week and the car is really fantastic. The only issue is that we know where we are at but not how our competitors are doing. We have done some 200kms during our tests. Some teams are running up as much as 2000kms. We cannot afford this. We do not have the same means as the manufacturer's teams. Still, I am not going for second place......" Dani Sola (E/Honda Civic A7): "Since I became Junior World Champion in 2002, I have stayed with Citro毛n, but racing in Spain. Arroyo has much at stake in elections

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's name isn't on the ballot, but she has plenty at stake in the Philippines' midterm elections Monday.

Much of the attention will be on the races for Congress, especially the House of Representatives. The opposition has mounted two impeachment efforts against Arroyo over allegations that she rigged the 2004 presidential vote, only to see both bids voted down in the House, where the president's allies dominate.

A major shift in power in the House would immediately spark moves to revive the impeachment case and send it to the opposition-dominated Senate for trial.

Still, the odds appear in favor of Arroyo -- who also survived two coup plots and numerous other crises during six years in power -- despite weak approval ratings.

The groups shares topped 600p for the first time since 2004 as it reported customer growth of 51,000 during the period, up 28% year-on-year. The broker kept its 640p price target as it believes operating metrics will continue to improve through the rest of the second half, while investment in broadband will begin to show benefits. In addition, Swiss broker UBS maintained 'buy' advice and 725p target as the figures beat consensus forecasts. Home Retail was down despite reporting full year earnings slightly better than Swiss broker UBS had expected. But analysts there repeated their neutral rating as they see no property angle or cyclical margin recovery at Argos.

Murray wants to invest surplus

Senate President Therese Murray wants to divert a portion of the state's surplus each year to pay for life science research, new technology projects, and housing in an effort to help create and keep jobs in Massachusetts.

In the Senate budget plan, to be unveiled Wednesday, Murray will propose changing a state law that sends all excess cash to reserves so that it reroutes up to $75 million each year to four state funds that invest in technology and housing.

"We've heard over and over again that the obstacle to job growth in Massachusetts is the lack of affordable housing, and we've also heard about the need for investment in our biotech industry," Murray told the Globe. "We're second in the nation with our state fund balance. Let's take a portion and invest it in the economy rather than have it sit there earning a small amount of interest."

The first batch of money could be distributed as early as November if the state ends this fiscal year, June 30, with a large enough surplus, Senate staff members said.

Wall St Week Ahead: Investors look for stocks pullback

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investors will likely look for evidence the U.S. housing slump may be over and for signs of moderating inflation next week before deciding whether the rally in U.S. stocks since mid-March is over.

The steepest one-day drop in U.S. stocks in two months on Thursday this week gave investors pause, but signs of slowing retail sales and slowing inflation on Friday encouraged a return of confidence.

"On a short-term basis, the market is very vulnerable to a normal 3 percent, 5 percent correction," said Al Goldman, chief market strategist at A.G. Edwards in St. Louis. "I would think we would probably have a normal pause to refresh coming up."

But when or what might spark a pullback is impossible to predict, he added.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI: Quote, Profile, Research and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX: Quote, Profile, Research both rose for a sixth straight week, with the Dow setting new all-time closing and intraday highs.

Economic Summits, China Trade War, and the Gold Bull Run

Back home, USFed Chairman Bernanke issued a grave warning to the US Congress on the shattered US financial balance sheets. My commentary on money supply explosion comes next.

Lastly, the Chinese trade disputes have taken a big step toward outright trade war and protectionism. Few see how the trade war will affect gold yet. They will soon enough. Restricted trade flow always results in higher prices. It is always accompanied by a scramble for resources in today's context. This trade war will include a massive bidding war and staggering battles to build stockpiles of all critical commodities.

Democracy vs. Growth in India

India is attempting a transformation few nations in modern history have successfully managed: liberalizing the economy within an established democratic order. It is hard to escape the impression that market interests and democratic principles are uneasily aligned in India today. The two are not inherently contradictory, but there are tensions between them that India's leaders will have to manage carefully.

Students of political economy know that market-based policies meant to increase the efficiency of the aggregate economy frequently generate short-term dislocations and resentment. In a democratic polity, this resentment often translates at the ballot box into a halt or a reversal of pro-market reforms. In the West, such tensions have remained moderate for at least three reasons: universal suffrage came to most Western democracies only after the Industrial Revolution, which meant that the poor got the right to vote only after those societies had become relatively rich; a welfare state has attended to the needs of low-income segments of the population; and the educated and the wealthy have tended to vote more than the poor.

Consumer Tips: What About Car Insurance?

(NC)-All owners are required by law to insure vehicles driven on public roads. Some provinces and territories offer public insurance while others have insurance sold privately. Here are some basic items to consider when buying vehicle insurance: • Liability insurance is mandatory, and is used as financial protection against loss or injury caused to others while operating your vehicle. The minimum amount of insurance required differs across jurisdictions but keep in mind that skimping on liability insurance may cost you in the long run. Minimum liability will not cover the cost of an accident resulting in the injury of several people, for example, particularly in circumstances where litigation is an option. • Vehicle damage insurance, unlike liability insurance, may be optional. Damage insurance, however, is still recommended for the simple reason that damages to a vehicle will quickly add up in the event of an accident where you are at fault.

Folk tales, superstitions follow the Irish

Most Americans view St. Patrick's Day as the day on which everyone is supposed to wear green or risk getting pinched.

But many people don't know what's behind the superstition and other symbols associated with the Irish such as leprechauns, shamrocks and fairies.

The luck of the Irish is legendary, as are many of the popular ways about how to either harness or scare off good fortune.

The story about the leprechaun and the pot of gold "that you eventually get cheated out of" is probably the best-known folk tale that persists in the culture, said Eddie Holland, a musician of Irish ancestry who has performed with San Patricios, a band that performs traditional Irish music, for six years.

"Another one is the existence of mystical people known as fairies and how you must try not to upset them," Holland said.

Arkansas adopts SEMA custom car title legislation

We recently reported how SEMA had helped get new kit and custom car registration legislation passed in Virginia. Well, the razorbacks didn't want their Southern rivals to get too far ahead and recently passed a similar bill of their own. Arkansas made changes to their vehicle titling and registration classifications for street rods and created a new class for custom vehicles too. The bill was recently signed into law by Governor Mike Beebe after being approved by the Arkansas State Legislature. Arkansas now defines a street rod as "an altered vehicle manufactured before 1949" and a custom as "an altered vehicle at least 25 years old and manufactured after 1948." And like the Virginia law, kit cars and replicars will get tagged as being the same model year as the car they aim to replicate. So a freshly built '32 Ford would be a 1932 Ford, and a new Cobra would be a 1960's car on the books.

Mayor's letter aired; where is the other side?

Recently, WDAM-TV news aired Mayor Melvin Mack's letter foiling a deal between Jones County Board of Supervisors and the mayor to build a new Department of Human Services building in the vicinity of the old Kress building.

The Hattiesburg American excerpted the letter in the March 6, 2007, edition, justifying withdrawing from the deal, which states, in part: "... I feel that we must be attentive to our downtown merchants and support the group that committed not only their time and efforts but also considerable financial resources to the improvement of our city."

According to the March 6 edition of the Leader-Call, "... Mayor Melvin Mack said that construction of the building would conflict with the downtown revitalization efforts." Will "revitalization" develop into a "canopy?"

However, it is interesting if one thinks back when the old Kress store was bustling with business.

BT criticised by Court for failing customers

British Telecom faced heavy criticism by a London Judge today (25/04/2007) for failing its customers and not responding efficiently enough when it had power to do so. In a terse judgment, BT were ordered to pay costs to Capital Fortune Mortgage Advisers and the national telecoms provider were held to be in clear breach of contract. The battle began some 10 days ago when incompetent BT engineers mistakenly cut off the award winning www.capitalfortune.com' target='_blank'>Mortgage Brokers Internet connection at its London based service centre. The action caused the loss of thousands of pounds and left homeowners across the capital unable to complete their mortgages. There were fears that BTs actions could push the Company to the brink of bankruptcy threatening legal action and costs if the London mortgage brokers did not back down.

Payless hopes Tailwind line of shoes pushes it to victory

Payless ShoeSource Inc. has paired with a subsidiary of Nike Inc. to market a high-performance $34.99 running sneaker, a move that both companies hope will tap a lucrative market.

Under the terms of the multiyear deal, Exeter Brands Group LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nike, will design and produce the shoes under the Tailwind collection, while Topeka-based Payless will serve as the exclusive retailer.

Marshal Cohen, chief analyst at NPD Group Inc., a Port Washington, N.Y.-based market research company, said that the Tailwind shoe will break new ground in the $3.5 billion mass-market athletic shoe industry because of the footwear's technology.

"This takes the low end to a new extreme," said Cohen, who noted that what is being offered in the high-performance athletic footwear sold at mass chains is not high-tech.

Chinese plant rolls out first MG

Nanjing Automobile, which bought the MG brand in July 2005, has rolled out the first Chinese-built MG sports cars from its production line in the eastern city of Nanjing.

These are the MG7 saloon and the MG-TF sports car, which, Nanajing officials say would be priced between $23,300 (approximately Rs10 lakh) and $51,700.

According to reports, the models are a replica of the British version and even sport the Union flag on their bodywork. The Chinese company has retained the acronym of the popular auto brand, MG, marketing it in China as "modern gentleman".

Nanjing Auto, which had acquired the bankrupt MG Rover's models and assets for £53 million in 2005, outbidding China's biggest carmaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC), built a massive new factory and installed robots and assembly lines it bought from MG Rover within six month.

3 Questions to Ask Before Selling

Here's a mystery straight from the "odd things that investors do" vault: Why do investors continue to follow a stock's performance after they've already sold it? If price gyrations in the stock have no impact on a portfolio, why bother?

Good question. In my case, I sometimes watch a stock much more closely after it has no part in my portfolio than I did when I actually owned it.

Why? Because I want to feel good about my sell decision. I want to know that I made the right choice. A stock that tanks after I sell crowns me as a market seer, and one that shoots higher goes in the "just kick me" file.

Aside from my own delusions, though, I've learned that my post-sale paranoia is evidence that I sold a stock with more emotion than reason. If I were selling for the right reasons, I'd show much more confidence in the decision and have little need to validate the choice.

The company has taken lot of steps to basically de-risk itself and get into several other auto components as well.

Growing US home loan defaults could be contagious

Pretoria - The increase in home loan defaults in the US could affect the South African housing market and economy, Standard Bank warned in its latest residential property gauge yesterday. It said slower US growth might hamper local exports and commodity prices, which in turn might slow house prices through reduced economic and income growth. In addition, there may be contagion to global housing markets to the extent that investors regard residential property as a single asset class and equity prices may soften if the mortgage lenders and buyers of their securitised assets experienced a further deterioration in their earnings and loss experiences. However, the bank said in the final analysis the fallout in the US subprime mortgage loan market "as it has occurred so far" had little effect on local house prices.

Car buying not on the agenda (for some)?

Latest findings from the Sainsbury's Bank Car Buying Index, which tracks (on a six-monthly basis) the number of people planning to purchase a car, indicates a decrease in those planning to buy a car. The research suggests that 7.65 million people intend buying a car between March 2007 and August 2007, a decrease of 430,000 people from the previous index, which covered the period September 2006 to February 2007. Expectations are that 53.2 billion will be spent on purchasing cars within the next six months, 16.2 billion less than the previous six months stated in the previous index.

Steven Baillie, loans manager, Sainsbury's Bank, makes the point that for the first time in two years there has been a fall in the total anticipated spend on new cars. He adds that over the past four years, since the bank started the car buying index, there have been occasional dips in planned spend on cars, but this fall by 16.2 billion represents by far the biggest drop witnessed to date.

"If you have a shoe that fits improperly or is worn out, you put yourself at risk for fatigue-type injuries," says Dr. Michael Shea, orthopedic surgeon at Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital.

KU's Collins escapes Chicago's mean streets

CHICAGO | Some say Sherron Collins' neighborhood is getting safer, but a few weeks ago, on North Leavitt Street, a girl was stabbed in the temple with a scalpel.

Happened just down the sidewalk from the Chicago Boys and Girls Club, where tonight members of the Kings and Deuces linger on the porch, smoking cigarettes while rehashing the gang fight that erupted a short time ago in the gymnasium.

"You missed it by 10 minutes," says program coordinator Nick Sanchez, still somewhat out of breath from breaking up the fracas. "This one was pretty bad."

A block away, on the corner of Damen and Diversey, a middle-aged man paces back and forth, almost to a cadence, never taking more than three steps before reversing his course. He's babbling to himself and flailing his arms in unpredictable directions, a sign that he may be on crack.

Need car insurance? Check out some ways to save money before ...

My insurance agent called me today and said my policy was up for renewal. She wanted to update my contact information and see if there were any discounts available on my policy. The call was from my agent, who happens to be in the family, and she actually cares to see me save money. However, some insurance agents might not be so kind, as your insurance premium usually impacts their commission rate. The tips she provided me might not work with every insurance company, and each discount rate varies, but knowing your options always helps. Before you actually get a car, check the insurance rate. Many people believe that insurance for giant gas guzzling SUVs are expensive and that an old Yugo would be cheaper. Some companies increase the liability based on the damage they could inflict on a car, how often they are stolen, and how much damage the car can withstand in an accident.

Catch 22 dilemma for hybrid cars: aggressive price vs high volume

LONDON: Battery makers and suppliers of other key parts for hybrid, energy-saving vehicles have one overriding question: when will the market be big enough to justify their costs?
A hybrid vehicle, which combines an internal combustion engine and an electric motor powered by batteries that can recapture energy normally lost, costs $4,500 to $6,000 more to build than a conventional vehicle, a recent report by the Sanford C Bernstein investment management firm said.
The upfront cost and load capacity are the main challenges for hybrids due to the expensive electrical motor and battery.
"It is a chicken-and-egg problem – the car makers say to us we want an aggressive price from the beginning and we say to them we can give them an aggressive price when we have the volume," Franck Cecchi, chief operation officer of battery maker Johnson Controls-Saft, said.

Man ShoeThe apparent confessions of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to planning the September 11 attacks were today met with shock and scepticism in almost equal measure.

The alleged No 3 in al-Qaida has long been suspected of being the mastermind behind the 2001 attacks in America but, if true, Mr Mohammed's most recent admissions would confirm his as a man the US has described as "one of history's most infamous terrorists".

Mr Mohammed was arrested in Pakistan in 2003 and spent time in secret CIA prisons before being moved with 13 others to a maximum security compound at Guantnamo Bay last year.

His list of confessions, in which he places himself at the centre of al-Qaida plots spanning a decade, are contained in the transcript of a tribunal held behind closed doors at the Cuban camp.basketball nike presented shoes

Cashback is a sweet, melancholy comedy for rueful romantics that should have landed here to honour St. Valentine. But we'll happily take it in the name of St. Patrick.

This expanded feature-length version of the 2006 Oscar-nominated short film by hugely talented young British writer-director Sean Ellis deals with the unhappy consequences of being dumped by a girlfriend.

The question asked is, What is love, anyway? And while we're at it, What is beauty? As formulated by shoe-gazing art student Ben Willis (appealing Sean Biggerstaff, the Quidditch captain in the first two Harry Potter films), there is no easy answer.

Ben is in pain. One day he's thick as thieves with Suzy (Michelle Ryan). The next, she's ditched him for a bigger man on campus. Because he's a sensitive artist, he takes the news like a shaft to the heart. Buy-in-Home.
